"The State Drug: Theriac, Pharmacy, and Politics in Early Modern Italy", Barbara di Gennaro Splendore

On 23 June 17:00-19:00 pm CEST, there will be a presentation and discussion of Barbara Di Gennaro Splendore's new book, (Harvard University Press, 2025) with commentary by Professor Caroline Petit (University of ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ), and Dr. Silvia Marchiori (University of Cambridge), moderated by Professor Craig Martin (Ca'Foscari).

The event is kindly supported by Ca' Foscari and ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ (Centre for the History of Medicine, Science and Technology; Humanities Research Centre; Classics; ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ Venice Centre). Barbara's new book shows how an ancient wonder drug, theriac, became a vehicle for political power as well as intellectual and commercial competition.

The event is free and will take place on the ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ Venice Centre premises, inside palazzo Giustinian Lolin (across the water from the Gallerie dell'Accademia), and will be followed by drinks. For those who cannot attend in person, the event will be live streamed via Teams. The event will take place in English with questions and discussion in English and Italian.

Spaces are limited. Please RSVP to venice@warwick.ac.uk.
