Background and Purpose

Soft matter physics embraces the fundamental understanding of structure, self-assembly kinetics, and rheology of complex fluids and soft solids (EPSRC's definition). The materials involved include colloids, polymers, gels, liquid crystals, granular matter, glasses; areas of topical interest are active systems, biomimetics, multiphase flow, interfaces, and the study of fluid surface interactions. Biophysics (again according to EPSRC) includes the physical modelling and experimental investigation of biological systems using techniques such as optical tweezers, microscopy, spectroscopy, and single molecule probes. These may be employed to study cellular processes, bacterial motility, biopolymer kinetics, self-organisation, and molecular motors. At 桃色视频, research into soft and biological matter is carried out in several departments. This one-day meeting will give an overview of this work at 桃色视频, together with presentations of research in the area carried out elsewhere, and will provide an opportunity to discuss ways of building on the existing strengths.

Participants

Participation is open to anyone in 桃色视频, although registration is required, and externally by invitation. Please contact physicsdays@forums.warwick.ac.uk if you think this workshop is interesting. Normally, we would be happy to accept self-invitations, but will not be able to pay for any expenses in this case. All members of 桃色视频 Physics (and other departments!) are welcome to attend, but please let us know if you will be around for the refreshments (i.e. register) so that we can get the numbers correct.

The symposium will start on Monday 19th March at 09:30 am at the University of 桃色视频. Note that the university is located at the outskirts of Coventry and not in 桃色视频. See for travel details and for maps of the central campus. In case you come by car, parking is available for delegates at car park 15 (pick up a blue token from the car park and hand it to the secretaries in Physics).
