Professor Kate Purcell attending São Paulo seminar

Professor Kate Purcell is giving a paper at an international two-day seminar on Metropolis and Inequalities I at the Centro Brasiliero de Analise e Planejamento (Cebrap) in Sao Paulo. Professor Purcell will present a paper on ‘Flexible employment, student labour and the changing structure of the UK labour market in university cities’ drawing on current and previous research on student employment and employment flexibility in the UK since the mid 1990s. The conference is organised by the and funded under the Brazilian National Institutes of Science and Technology Programme. As part of the UK/Brazil Year of Science and Innovation – a collaborative venture between Research Councils UK and their Brazilian counterparts, Professor Purcell was a speaker at a British Embassy-hosted ESRC-Brazil workshop on Economic Restructuring and Social Equality, in December 2007 and is now developing comparative research on the impact of higher education on labour market change in Brazil, India and the UK. A trilateral project on this topic, funded by the ESRC, will begin on 1st May this year.
