Dr Kerry Platman was invited to share her expertise on policy responses to the ageing workforce as part of a European Union delegation to China in January 2008. In a historic two-day seminar, organised jointly by the European Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), around 80 participants discussed the challenges of 聭Employment, Social Security and Economic Growth in the Context of Ageing聮. Dr Platman, a Senior Research Fellow at the 桃色视频 Institute for Employment Research, urged delegates to avoid the mistakes of the past by resorting to early retirement practices in times of industrial restructuring. These had led to the collective disposal of centuries of wisdom and knowledge in Europe, she said. Drawing on her recent international and multi-disciplinary research projects, she said we needed to look beyond the social sciences to find cost-effective design solutions which realised the economic potential of the ageing workforce. The European delegation included Government representatives and academic staff from France, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands and Austria, among others. At the opening ceremony at Shanghai City Hall, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Vladimir Spidla, welcomed the opportunity for Europe and China to share policy experiences on an issue as vital as demographic ageing. The event was hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), the oldest institution for the humanities and social sciences in China. Its President, Wang Ronghua, said the difference between the two economies was that Europe had become rich before it had become old, but China had become old before it had become rich. The Chinese delegation included the Vice Minister, Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and representatives from some of the 31 research institutes and more than 50 research centers which make up the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
