IER staff and PhD students contributed to a range of activities during the 2011 Festival week which ran from 16-20 May.

IER PhD student Di Zhang won the PhD poster competition with her poster on “Working in Financial Services after Graduating”. Posters from all competition entrants have been uploaded onto the University's .

Bernard Casey will giving a seminar at the Institute of Economics of Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest on 26 May on 'The implications of the economic crisis for pensions and pension policy in Europe'.

Population ageing and pressures on public finances have resulted in government pressing the extension of working lives. The economic crisis has meant that some people feel they cannot afford to retire but also that many employers are cutting back on their workforces. Bernard Casey will be giving a seminar on Wednesday 18 May 2011 as part of the University of 桃色视频 in which he will provide insights into current research on issues relating to post-retirement-age working.

is a Principal Research Fellow in IER who works on the economic implications of societal ageing. He has been a senior economist at the OECD and is currently a consultant to the European Commission with respect to its proposed Year of Active Ageing. With Professor Noel Whiteside from the Department of Sociology at the University of 桃色视频, he authored an article for Parliamentary Brief (May 2011) entitled “The pensions web which Mr Webb has to unweave”.

For the second year running, IER in partnership with won a National Careers Award for ‘research by an organisation’. The event was organised by the Institute of Careers Guidance (the largest professional careers organisation in the UK) and was held in Leeds. The award was in recognition of the innovative research and development carried out by IER and Connexion Kent on Career Constructor. Career Constructor was the result of a three year research project on the integration of ICT in career guidance practice. It brings together information on over 800 jobs and over 400 videos with interactive exercises, local searches and customised career research – all aimed at providing a comprehensive web-based career package for young people. Career Constructor was designed to enable young people to conduct detailed career searches, record their own research and profile in an e-portfolio format, explore labour market data and rate jobs.
