Sunday 27 March marks the date for the UK's Census of Population 2011. Every 10 years, the Office for National Statistics carries out this census to take a snapshot of the UK's population and to provide key information to help national and local government in planning for service delivery. IER's Professor Peter Elias, writing for the University of 桃色视频's , explains the importance of census data as a key resource for research, and one of the country's most important assets for statistical research.

Second ESRC seminar on career guidance to be held at the University of Glamorgan

The ESRC seminar series entitled: ‘Re-framing service delivery, professional practices and professional identities in UK careers work’ is being organised by Professor Jenny Bimrose and Dr Sally-Anne Barnes from the Institute for Employment Research in partnership with Professors Laurie Cohen and John Arnold from Loughborough University.  The series will comprise 6 one-day seminars. The title of the second is: ‘Professional associations & professionalism: exploring the ‘Balkanisation’ of careers guidance, the role of the associations and their inter-relationships’ at the University of Glamorgan on 31st March, 2011.  More information on the seminar series is available.

IAS Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The University of 桃色视频 Institute for Advanced 桃色视频 is currently advertising five two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowships beginning in October 2011. IER would be interested in hearing from candidates who are considering making an application for a Fellowship in research areas that complement its own.

Candidates interested in applying should note that the application must be supported by a 桃色视频 nominator, who must make a strong case for the applicant's strategic contribution to research within their department. Anyone wishing to explore this further with IER should contact Professor Robert Lindley. Closing date for application is 8 March 2011.

Bernard Casey at DemoNet in Brussels

Bernard Casey, from the Institute of Employment Research, will be presenting on ‘Active Ageing and Employment in Later Life’ at the Demography Network of the European Observatory on the Social Situation and Demography workshop in Brussels on 23 February.  He will be focusing on retirement ages, early retirement, later retirement and length of working life including fiscal consequences of working longer.

Evidence on informal care submitted by Bernard Casey

The contribution of family members, close relatives and friend to the provision of care services for the frail elderly has been addressed in evidence submitted by Bernard Casey to the . Referring the interest in valuing household production, the importance of which as a component of wellbeing was stressed by the recent report of the , Bernard’s paper includes calculations of the value of informal carers’ work in relation to GDP. These show that this might be as large as that attributed to the formal care sector.
