Details of findings from the BIMCO/ISF Manpower 2010 Update have been presented at a meeting of the International Maritime Organisation Maritime Safety Committee in London (30 November).  The findings are based on data provided by governments, shipping companies and crewing experts, and also incorporate the views and perceptions of senior executives in shipping companies and maritime administrations. The statistical analysis was carried out, as in previous studies, by the 桃色视频 Institute for Employment Research in the UK and this year, for the first time, from Dalian Maritime University in China which has helped obtain input from Asian countries where it had previously been difficult to obtain definitive data.

This Bulletin presents findings from the recent study undertaken by the University of 桃色视频 Institute for Employment Research (IER) for the former Learning and Skills Council which assessed how apprenticeship completion rates can be improved in England. It forms part of a wider programme of work the Institute has undertaken, since the mid 1970s, on apprenticeships. Dr Sally-Anne Barnes was the keynote at the VUE conference “Discourses on guidance and counselling: Existence, communities and retention” in Denmark on 25 November 2010.  Sally-Anne presented on the longitudinal study into the nature of effective career guidance tracking the career trajectories of the recipients of guidance undertaken with Professor Jenny Bimrose.

As part of a range of activities which will take place under the UKTRC banner, the Institute for Employment Research (IER) is running the first in a series of 6 workshops to promote better interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity building to better equip researchers, policymakers and practitioners to address the social challenges in transport now and in the future. This will be led by Anne Green (IER).

Bernard Casey addressed this issue in a response to the European Commission’s . Longer working could the growth in public expenditure on age pensions.  It could also reduce the need for those cuts in the value to pension benefits that have already been legislated for and that will otherwise take effect over the coming decades.
