This bulletin outlines the development of a website that seeks to bring career guidance research and practice closer together. The shared knowledge base underpinning the website was developed from the contextualised problems that policy makers, managers, practitioners, researchers and trainers face. The website represents a major contribution to research capacity building within the UK guidance community.

We are delighted to announce that the ESRC Research Resources Board has created a new post, Strategic Advisor (Data Resources) and has appointed Peter Elias of the 桃色视频 Institute for Employment Research to this post for three years in the first instance from October 2004. The aim of the post is to support and develop the provision of a wide range of data for the social science research community. The Office for National Statistics, many government departments and agencies and a wide range of other bodies such as the research foundations and the Medical Research Council, contribute significantly to the development of such resources and share these with the academic community. Thus, there is considerable scope to co-ordinate the development of new and valuable sources of information for social scientific research.

Commenting on this prestigious research award, which brings with it ESRC funding for the first three years of over 拢0.5m, Professor Robert Lindley, the Director of the IER, expressed the view that this is a well-deserved recognition of Peter聮s contribution to and expertise in the field of research methods and resources for the social sciences, and that it reflects exceptionally well on the work of the IER in this area and on the University at large.
