Congratulations to Emily Roberts (Astronomy and Astrophysics) and Kai Ross (Diamond Group), two postgraduate students for being shortlisted in the Faculty of SEM postgraduate researchers who teaches award category. The postgraduate Researchers Who Teach Awards honour colleagues who, while pursuing their own studies, enrich the student experience and strengthen our academic community through their teaching.

2026 work experience placements successfully completed

During the first week of the Easter break (30th March - 2nd April) the department welcomed 12 students to our annual work experience programme. The programme is option to year 10-12 students with an interest in Physics, with priority for local students and those from under-represented groups*. The programme forms part of the department's wider outreach work to broaden access to physics.

��ɫ��Ƶ Physicists attend STEM for Britain

Three members of the department were invited to attend STEM for Britain at the House of Commons on Tuesday 17^th March to present their research posters.

Agrima Agarwal (Phd Student, Ultrafast and Terahertz Photonics Group), Edward Butler-Caddle (Ultrafast and Terahertz Photonics Group) and Sahl Rowther (Research Fellow, Astronomy & Astrophysics Group) applied to present their research at the event and were accepted following a rigorous process.

Tribute to Professor Phil Woodruff

It is with the greatest sadness that we learn of the death of one of the pioneers of the ��ɫ��Ƶ Physics Department, Professor D. Phil Woodruff, FRS.

Phil’s funeral will be held on at 2 p.m. on 19th March at Harbury church (Church St, Harbury, Leamington Spa CV33 9HE). Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired, in memory of Phil for the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated. Other arrangements will be shared when we have the details.

Our work experience will provide students with a broad insight into physics and what it would be like to work in a busy university physics department. You’ll spend time with our highly skilled research and technical staff learning about real-life physics problems and exciting research projects.

Applications are open to students in Year 10-12, and close at midnight on Sunday 1st March 2026.

New grant awarded in collaboration with WMG to develop fusion shielding

Dr Jessica Marshall has been awarded £236,000, out of a possible £250,000 for a six-moth research project funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), marking a significant step forward in the development of Novel shielding materials and technologies for fusion shielding.

The project launched in collaboration with Dr Shubham Sharma and Professor Darren Hughes from ��ɫ��Ƶ Manufacturing Group (WMG) aims to explore low-activation radiation-dense shielding solutions for practical fusion reactors.
