Athena Swan in the School
Athena Swan Charter
The Athena Swan Charter is a framework used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. It was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise the commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment. The Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly and not just barriers to progression that affect women. Read more at
Athena Swan in The School
Our continual commitment to the principles of the Athena Swan Charter, has enabled the School to increase diversity throughout the student and staff cohorts, including an increase in female representation at Professorial level from 6% at the time of the School鈥檚 Bronze Award in 2013, to 20% under the Gold Award.
This success reflects years of progress through initiatives supporting staff and student visibility as role models, and policy development to create more inclusive ways of working.
Self Assessment Team
Our Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team (SAT) is a diverse group of staff and students from across the department, representing a range of roles, career stages, and perspectives.
We have recently appointed theme leads to drive our action plan, working collaboratively to implement and monitor our Athena Swan action plan, ensuring that progress is sustained and embedded into everyday practice.

To ensure female students in tutor and project groups are always with another female
'SoE does a good job making sure women feel comfortable; with a heavy male ratio, group project teams include at least 2 women or none at all'
'With group work and tutorials, there are always multiple girls in the group which have them. This is clearly intentional and your efforts have not gone unnoticed by myself, this creates a space in which it is easier to contribute our ideas and to be heard'
