Multilateral Engagement Action Group

The Multilateral Engagement Action Group (MEAG) supports the University鈥檚 engagement in multilateral law and policymaking processes, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other UN environmental and sustainable development spaces.

It operates to ensure that the University鈥檚 engagement in these spaces is strategic, coordinated, and aligned with its sustainability and global engagement ambitions, while also strengthening institutional learning and impact from international climate, sustainability and sustainable development engagement.

Role and Remit

  • Provide strategic oversight of the University鈥檚 engagement with relevant multilateral processes, ensuring transparency, coordination, and effective delivery across all activities.
  • Enhance the visibility and coherence of the University鈥檚 engagement in the multilateral arena, contributing to the University鈥檚 wider sustainability policies, narratives and practices and strengthening internal and external communication of the University鈥檚 sustainability impact across all areas of its work.
  • Support the planning and delivery of engagement activities, including oversight of associated application, nomination, and selection processes to ensure fairness, clarity, and consistency in representation and participation.
  • Enable capacity-building, training and professional development opportunities for participants, with particular emphasis on supporting students, early-career researchers, and less-experienced attendees to engage meaningfully in multilateral processes.

Governance

The group meets twice per term and reports to the Sustainability Committee.

Conference of Parties (COP)

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the annual United Nations climate summit, bringing together governments, businesses, researchers, and civil society to negotiate and accelerate global action on climate change. It is a key forum for reviewing progress on international climate commitments and shaping future climate policy.

UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB)

The UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB) meetings are interim climate negotiations held each year to support the implementation of international climate agreements and prepare decisions for the annual COP summit. They bring together experts, governments, and stakeholders to advance technical and policy discussions on key climate issues.

IPBES

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent international body that assesses the state of biodiversity and ecosystem services, providing policymakers with evidence-based insights to support conservation and sustainable development. Often described as the 鈥淚PCC for biodiversity,鈥 it helps strengthen the connection between science and decision-making.
