CCC hosts first-of-its-kind practice-academia interface event at the Inner Temple, London

On Wednesday 24 June, the CCC hosted a first-of-its-kind event at in London.

The event, titled "Enhancing the Dialogue Between Public Law Practice and Academia", co-hosted with the , was an opportunity to bring together academic researchers, students, and a range of practitioners - judges, barristers, NGO practitioners, parliamentary staff - to discuss this important topic. The event featured a roundtable discussion among Lord Justice Rabinder Singh (Court of Appeal), Professor Alison Young (Law Commission/Cambridge), Dominic Grieve KC (Temple Garden Chambers), and Professor Tom Hickman KC (Blackstone Chambers/UCL). The roundtable was moderated by CCC co-directors Dr Mara Malagodi and Dr David Vitale.

The roundtable highlighted several important aspects of enhancing the dialogue between practitioners and academic researchers, including:

  • Understanding how practitioners (judges, barristers, politicians, law commissioners) use academic research in public law
  • How academic researchers can tailor their research to be of greater use to practitioners
  • Valuable channels through which practitioners can access relevant academic research, including blogposts
  • Formal programmes that foster interaction and direct communication, including secondments, "professor in practice" positions, academic experts in chambers, judicial assistants
  • Using social media, including LinkedIn and BlueSky

Thanks to our wonderful panel of speakers for a rich and thought-provoking discussion.

Thanks also to those who attended (despite the intense heatwave moving across the UK at the moment) - both for attending and for their excellent questions.

We would also like to thank Stephen Hockman KC and Sebastian Payne for their generous support in organising the event.

A recording of the roundtable is available on the CCC's YouTube channel .
