About me
I am a mathematician at the Department of Statistics with specialism in pure and applied probability. My current research interests predominantly span the following topics:
- Branching Markov processes, Superprocesses and Continuous-state branching processes
- Fragmentation and Coalescence
- Stochastic modelling of radiation transport
- Self-similar Markov processes, Markov additive processes and L茅vy processes
- Monte-Carlo simulation of stochastic processes
- Anything which can be proved in a beautiful way using a martingale
I am PI of the (FEC) 拢7.3M programme grant , which looks at stochastic modelling and Monte Carlo simulation of various forms of radiation and their application in the energy, healthcare and space industries.
I am also co-leading the for UK-Latin America engagement in probability.
As part of the set-up phase of the new Centre for Mathematical and Computing Sciences (CAMaCS), I have taken up the role of director.
I am always looking for talented PhD students

In previous incarnations:
I have held academic positions at the LSE, Edinburgh University, Utrecht Univeristy (where I also held a Dutch five-year "Mathematics in Focus" research fellowship), Heriot-Watt University and the University of Bath as well as spending time as a visiting professor at ETH Z眉rich, Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles and CIMAT, Mexico. Whilst at Bath I led over a period of 15 or more years. For 9 years and two funding sessions I was PI and co-director of the at Bath, as well as director for the , also in Bath. Between 2018 and 2023 I held a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award. Together with Leif D枚ring, I initiated the project during the global lockdown of 2020. You can read more from my Bio.
