Introduction

We are now offering the opportunity to study a language as part of the Post Graduate Certificate in Transferable Skills. Language skills are highly prized in academia and industry, as researchers and enterprises operate increasingly on a global scale.

Whether you are learning the basics of a new language or building on prior knowledge, language learning is a rewarding pursuit and will deepen your understanding of different cultures, enable you to communicate more effectively with others and give you a competitive advantage in your career development.

The courses on offer are academic language modules hosted by The Language Centre.

Languages Offered

You will need to refer to this Language Centre table to decide what academic level you will need.

Funding and accreditation

You can take 10 CATS of language learning as part of your PG Cert, i.e. 1 term's worth of language learning. Fees for 1 term will be covered by the PG Certificate in Transferable Skills.

There are 15 Term 1 funded places available on a first come first serve basis as long as you meet the criteria below.

You can take any Academic Language Module in Term 1 for your PG Certificate in Transferable Skills. You can also study a second term but the second term's fees will not be covered and you will still only be able to use 10 CATs towards your PG Cert.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In order to qualify for funding you will need to meet certain criteria:

  1. You need to be in either Year 2 or Year 3 of your PhD
  2. You must be able to demonstrate that you are up to date with your PG Certificate in Transferable Skills in Science, i.e. if you are in Year 2, you must have completed Doctoral Skills 1 and an optional module.
  3. If you are in Year 3, you must have completed four modules, Doctoral Skills 1 & 2, plus two optional modules.

As part of the registration process we will check SkillsForge to make sure you have completed all the required PGCert Transferable Skills (PGCTS) modules to take part. Please note your registration to study a Language will not be accepted without this evidence in the Doctoral Skills Tab of SkillsForge.

Note: The Language modules are high quality academic modules which are formally assessed, and the workload reflects this. If you wish to take a Language module, please read the information on the course website carefully and make sure that you understand what will be expected before you apply. You need to achieve a minimum of 40% to pass this module.
