Introduction

This module aims to provide you with the skills to enable you to teach effectively to the benefit of your own research and of the students you are teaching. No matter what career you choose, one of the key skills that is most often required is the ability to train others in the knowledge you have.

During your PhD you will benefit from teaching as it forces you to understand concepts more fully, which in turn will support your own research activities.

How to complete this module

1. Register for the module
2. Attend a workshop covering teaching groundwork and module prep.
3. Attend 'Preparing to Teach in HE workshop', which is run through your individual department and has an online Moodle Course to complete. Once completed, there will be a Moodle Certificate for you to include in your portfolio. For more information use this link Preparing to Teach on the Academic Development Centre site.
4. Finally, complete the handbook with appropriate evidence from your teaching and add it to your Transferable Skills portfolio on SkillsForge.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

• Communicate research to more junior students or school pupils
• Critical assessment of their own performance in teaching
• Understand how to communicate effectively to students/school pupils
• Be responsible for designing material suitable to support students/pupils in achieving learning goals.
• Able to prepare and deliver material in a professional manner.

The Scholars Programme – PhD tutor opportunity – 2025-26

The Scholars Programme is run by , an award-winning university access charity. They recruit and train doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to deliver programmes of university-style teaching to pupils in schools that serve under-represented communities.
