We want a high level of ethics and integrity to underpin all the research we do here at ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ.

A simple and admirable aspiration, but actually achieving this in our day-to-day research can be far more complex:

• What does informed consent really mean?
• How do we obtain UK and University ethical approval for our plans?
• What experiments are ethical to do on animals/embryos/children/patients/cadavers….?
• Who should be first author?
• Who even defines what ‘ethical’ means?

This module aims to help you with two things: empowering you to be a more ethical researcher, and enabling you to successfully and efficiently navigate the relevant approval processes. It will be of use to those with a general interest in research ethics as well as those whose research directly invokes ethical approval.

You will need to complete an online training course via Moodle and attend a full-day seminar. Assessment is via an online quiz in Moodle and a presentation on a relevant ethical issue.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

• Understand ethical theory, codes of ethics, principles, values in ethics and the range of ethical issues that arise in practice
• Discuss ethical theory
• Be aware of ethical issues applicable to their own research
• Identify and analyse ethical difficulties and dilemma arising in practice, and communicate conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences
